Having discovered 10 years or so ago, with a certain amount of surprise, that at the beginning of this century topographical photographs of Oldland Common and the surrounding area had been commercially produced and sold, I was even more surprised and greatly delighted that, whilst extremely rare, some had survived right up to the present day. With
a latent interest in history, particularly in local history, I decided
that I would try and collect as many as possible of these Post Cards and
other pictures of local interest so that, collectively, they would
create an historical and pictorial study of the social and topographical
changes, which have taken place during this century. Fortunately, having
received an initial boost by obtaining copies of about a dozen cards, my
patience and perseverance has been gradually rewarded as the years have
slipped by, and I now feel that they, and the information gathered,
should be shared. During
those years, I developed the idea of producing a book, so that more and
more people could share in the nostalgia engendered by the old
photographs. By itself, Oldland Common the village, did not have
sufficient pictures to warrant a publication, and with the knowledge
that there was the peculiar situation whereby the village was not in the
parish, which shares its name, I decided that to be as comprehensive as
possible, I needed to encompass in one book, both the village and the
parish and, to included as much of its history as possible. Without
wishing to define the boundaries too exactly, I have based the area
roughly on the old civil parish boundary of the mid-nineteenth century,
and this has meant that I have been able to include the distinct and
separate villages of Willsbridge, Longwell Green, Cadbury Heath, North
Common and, Warmley. However where there has been a story of interest,
which occurred outside of the boundary, I have deliberately included the
details for the benefit of the reader. |
