NASCR Code of Ethics

Most professional Codes of Ethics derive from universal standards which are used to define appropriate conduct. NASCR's Code of Ethics also draws on general principles rather than confining itself to issues specific to the computing profession.

Every member of NASCR - whether a voting member or associate member – is expected to observe ethical standards of professional conduct. The statements embodied in the Code of Ethics attempt to identify some of the issues likely to be faced in the work place.

These fundamental principles are intended to serve members as a basis for defining ethical conduct in their professional capacities. They could also be used as a point of reference for judging the merit of any formal complaint pertaining to violation of professional ethical standards. The words and phrases contained in any Code of Ethics are obviously subject to varying interpretations but members are encouraged to attempt to apply the spirit of these recommendations whenever circumstances dictate.

1. Be fair and take action to avoid discrimination
The values of equality, tolerance, respect for others and the principles of equal justice are encompassed within this statement. Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, age, disability, national origin or other such factors is an explicit violation of the NASCR ethos and cannot be tolerated.

2. Honour property rights including copyrights and patents
Violation of copyrights, patents, trade secrets and the terms of license agreements is prohibited by law in most circumstances. Copying of software without proper authorisation is deemed to be unprofessional conduct and a violation of this code. Unauthorised duplication of software or materials must not be condoned.

3. Respect the privacy of others
Computing and information technology offer unlimited possibilities for violating the privacy of individuals and groups on a daily basis. It is the responsibility of professionals to preserve the privacy of individuals and any data relating to them. Care should be taken to ensure the accuracy of data as well as protecting it from unauthorised access or accidental disclosure to inappropriate third parties. Procedures must be established to allow individuals to review their records and correct inaccuracies.

4. Honour confidentiality
Members should honour any explicit or implicit promise to respect the confidentiality of information concerning employers, employees, clients or users unless discharged from such obligations by requirements of the law or other principles within this code. Any NASCR member who receives privileged or confidential information within NASCR from another member should not disclose this information outside the organisation without consulting the member who initially provided the information.

5. Improve public understanding of computing and its likely consequences and effects
Computing professionals have a responsibility to share technical knowledge with the public by encouraging understanding of computing, including the limitations of computer systems and their impacts. It therefore follows that members should attempt to dispel any inaccurate myths about computers and computing.

6. Members will promote their NASCR Membership in a positive manner and will not do anything to bring NASCR into disrepute
NASCR has achieved an unparalleled position in the computing industry as a result of years of effort and commitment. All members are REQUIRED to promote NASCR appropriately in order to preserve and protect its reputation. The public display or selling of material which might be deemed offensive or pornographic falls within the scope of this statement. Employees of members should be made aware of the existence of the NASCR Code of Ethics and encouraged to adopt its principles in relation to their own conduct while working for a NASCR Member.

7. Members will conduct ALL business in a fair, honest and ethical manner
The individual businesses within the NASCR Membership have been built on honest and ethical values. Members should always attempt to provide the highest standard of service. Professional dealings whether with customers, suppliers, contractors, employers or employees should be governed by the above statement.

8. Wherever possible NASCR Members will endeavour to assist each other
Every member has their own specific knowledge, expertise or skills. The potential support and information available to members from within NASCR should increase as additional members join. It is hoped that all members will respond positively to any requests, either formal or informal, for help or advice from fellow members.

9. All NASCR members will abide by any majority votes via any ballot
As an association we are governed by the majority and require every member to vote on issues which affect the association as a whole. The Association operates within a democratic framework and so the decision of the majority on any vote must be respected and implemented.

10. Members are urged to respond to all surveys undertaken by the NASCR office
The surveys issued by the Association to its members are intended to provide the NASCR Committee with an overview of the Association as a whole. The information, suggestions and ideas provided should help the committee to ensure NASCR's continued growth within the Independent sector. All surveys are conducted in the strictest confidence and no information relating to individuals is ever passed on to any third party.

11. Violations of this code are inconsistent with membership of NASCR
Adherence by professionals to any code of ethics is generally a voluntary matter. However, any member's failure to comply with these principles in their professional capacity may lead to their membership of NASCR being terminated as determined by the NASCR Committee.
