Whatever the weather it's home to IWAC

The home of the Isle of Wight Athletic Club is the FAIRWAY ATHLETIC CENTRE, built in the grounds of Sandown High School, on the popular south-east coast of the Island.

Fairway was built in time to host the International ISLAND GAMES in 1993.

It is an all-weather, eight-lane track with all the field facilities needed to stage every athletic discipline.

While management of Fairway has shifted from one body to the next over the years, its programme has remained busy and active. In 1999, for instance, we hosted four home fixtures on top of the usual Open and Closed Championships.

The year 2000 saw the upgrading of the Steeplechase barriers and maintenance work has been carried out on the Pole Vault area. A new Hammer cage was recently completed.

The Isle of Wight will be bidding next year to host the International Island Games for a second time in 2007.
This is partly because we enjoyed it so much the last time ? see our page on the
2001 Island Games and partly because planning this far ahead means (boring, but true) that we can draw up a sensible maintenance budget. Much easier to do a bit here and a bit there now, than wait and be in a mad rush nearer the time!
It isn't every day, after all, that any local athletic club gets to host a major International competition. We want to do it full justice!

The latest news is that the Fairway Sports Centre is going to have a stand and extra facilities built soon...... watch this space!!!
